Le permafrost constitue environ 25% des terres dans l\u2019h\u00e9misph\u00e8re nord, ce qui \u00e9quivaut \u00e0 une superficie de 23 millions de km2.<\/p>\n<p>Le permafrost peut \u00eatre compar\u00e9 \u00e0 un <strong>gigantesque cong\u00e9lateur<\/strong>, dans lequel \u00a0des plantes mortes et autres <strong>substances organiques<\/strong> sont gel\u00e9s. Les <strong>2\/3<\/strong> se trouvent dans le permafrost sib\u00e9rien. En effet, le permafrost anadien \u00e9tait recouvert d\u2019une couche de glace lors de la derni\u00e8re \u00e8re glaciaire et contient, de ce fait, moins de mati\u00e8re organique.
